UN chief picks Tanzanian deputy

The new United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon, has named a Tanzanian official, Asha-Rose Migiro, as his deputy. As the current Tanzanian foreign minister, she will replace British diplomat Mark Malloch Brown. Before joining the government, Migiro was a senior lecturer at the law faculty of Dar es Salaam University. The appointment fulfils Ban's pledge to choose a woman to fill the post of deputy secretary general. Ban described Migiro as a highly respected leader who had championed the cause of developing countries over the years. (Rts)
