UNITA rebels kill 12 in Angola ambush

UNITA rebels killed 12 civilians in an attack on a vehicle in northeastern Angola's Lunda-Norte province, the country's Roman Catholic radio station reported on Tuesday, January 22. The attack took place 90 kilometres outside the Lunda Norte capital Dundo at the weekend, the independent Radio Ecclesia said. It gave no further details.

Analysts say UNITA has stepped up its guerrilla tactics since government forces gained the military upper hand and forced the rebels to operate in smaller units from often remote areas. More than a million people have died in Africa's longest-running conflict, in which more than three million others have been uprooted from their homes. (The Namibian)
